Batteries

Certain types of batteries are the first product group for which a DPP will become mandatory in the European Union. 

The battery passport is introduced under the EU Batteries Regulation and relies on the common DPP technical system established under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). It aims to improve transparency and sustainability throughout the battery lifecycle. 

Why batteries?

Batteries play a key role in Europe's transition to clean energy and sustainable mobility. At the same time, battery value chains involve complex information on materials, performance, repair, reuse and recycling. 

The battery passport will help make relevant information more accessible to economic operators, consumers, repairers and recyclers and public authorities, supporting a more circular and sustainable battery value chain.

Key requirements

The battery passport will be linked to a battery through a QR code, in line with the requirements set out in the Batteries Regulation and the applicable DPP technical framework. It will provide access to information defined under the Batteries Regulation. 

Depending on the battery category and applicable requirements, information may include: 

  • Battery identification and technical characteristics; 
  • Manufacturer and economic operator information; 
  • Performance and durability data; 
  • Information supporting repair, reuse and recycling; 
  • Sustainability and circularity-related information. 

The battery passport will operate through a decentralised system, with detailed battery information maintained by the responsible economic operator.

Who is affected?

Battery passport requirements will apply to economic operators placing certain types of batteries on the EU market: electric vehicle batteries, batteries for e-bikes, e-mopeds and e-scooters, home storage batteries and industrial batteries. 

The obligation to create and maintain the battery passport lies with the economic operator placing the finished battery on the market, rather than suppliers of individual components or modules. 

Implementation timelines*

  • July 2026: Implementing Act for the DPP Registry adoption.
  • July 2026: Implementing decision on the adoption of six of the eight harmonised standards developed by CEN-CENLEC JTC24. 
  • 20 July 2026: DPP Registry becomes operational. 
  • 18 February 2027: The battery passport becomes mandatory for relevant battery categories placed on the EU market.
