The European Commission roadmap towards phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessments is a milestone for paving the way for transitioning from traditional animal testing methods to innovative non-animal approaches. Together with the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA), the European Commission is organising the Animal-Free Chemical Safety Assessment and Roadmap Implementation Conference that provides an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to the roadmap implementation.

Description
The three-day event consists of three parts:
At the first day, we will explore options of fostering the use of safe spaces in different legislative areas. Safe spaces are platforms for bilateral exchanges that allow applicants or registrants to confidentially share data with regulators and discuss the potential regulatory acceptability of specific methods within a given regulatory context. Perspectives from different stakeholders will be presented, followed by a panel discussion.
At the second day, a dedicated session will focus on possible applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in regulatory science and its potential contribution to animal-free chemical safety assessments. The session aims to provide an overview of opportunities and challenges for the use of AI and the required developments for its wider application.
In addition, on day two, the European Commission will provide an overview of the roadmap towards phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessments and on the One-Substance-One-Assessment sub-group on test method development and validation.
The third day will focus on the role that EPAA can play in accelerating the transition towards non-animal approaches. It consists of breakout group discussions aimed at developing concrete proposals for how EPAA can support Roadmap implementation over the next five years. The breakout groups will focus on the following areas:
- Human Health
- Environmental Safety
- Endocrine Disruption
- Long-term Paradigm Change
Each breakout group will seek to identify priorities, collaborative actions, and practical mechanisms through which EPAA can contribute to advancing the transition towards animal-free chemical safety assessment.
