Agreement reached on measurement rules for electric charging and hydrogen refilling

The Commission welcomes the political agreement reached today between the European Parliament and the Council on harmonised measurement rules for electric vehicle charging and hydrogen refilling stations across the EU. 

The initiative, which extends the Measuring Instruments Directive, ensures accurate and reliable measurements, empowering consumers via precise and transparent billing. It also helps manufacturers benefit from cost savings and faster infrastructure deployment through unified requirements.

The amendment supports the rollout of clean mobility and helps the EU achieve its climate and energy goals. It also introduces modern metering rules to promote smart electricity and gas meters, in turn enhancing renewable energy integration and efficient energy management. It also brings simplified certification for thermal energy meters. These harmonised rules therefore strengthen resilience in the evolving energy landscape.

Accurate measurements are the backbone of a functioning Single Market, protecting consumers and supporting innovation across sectors. This initiative reflects the EU’s commitment to a green and digital transition, empowering citizens and businesses to contribute to a sustainable future.

Once formally adopted, the new rules will apply 2.5 years after their entry into force via the amended directive.
