On 22 June, the ICC and the European Committee of the Regions held their joint Mayors Summit on Local Green Deals, launching Local Green Deals - Blueprint for Action. The blueprint helps cities and towns accelerate their sustainable transition via a seven-step approach. Experts and officials from various cities shared their knowledge and experience on accomplishing the transition and the specific role of cities in it.
With the Intelligent Cities Challenge’s blueprint as a roadmap, towns and cities can build momentum to scale up and implement their Local Green Deal. It outlines the rationale behind Local Green Deals with key principles, levers, and steps for cities, stakeholders, and local communities to implement.
Cities and towns have an important role to play in implementing the European Green Deal. “Local Green Deals are the concrete vehicle EU cities can use to deliver on their sustainability goals and help Europe become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050,” explains Anna Athanasopoulou, Head of Unit for Proximity, Social Economy and Creative Industries at the Directorate-General for Industry.
“Adopting a Local Green Deal approach, based on co-creation among local stakeholders, practically means that cities support local industry and SMEs lead the twin green and digital transition, create new jobs, mitigate the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 and accelerate green innovation and fairer recovery.”
