Ecodesign: Commission seeks public opinion on circular economy and energy efficiency measures for mobile phones and tablets

The objective of this consultation is to collect feedback from all stakeholders on potential new measures, and information about users’ habits, preferences and choices related to their purchase, usage, repair and disposal of mobile phones and tablets. The feedback from the consultation will help the Commission to assess the relevance of new regulatory measures in order to ensure that these products become more energy efficient and durable as well as more easy to repair, upgrade, reuse and recycle.

New initiatives to address the life-cycle of products and ensure that the resources used are kept in the EU economy for as long as possible were announced in the Commission’s 2020 New Circular Economy Action Plan, including possible measures on mobile phones and tablets. The Commission has now issued an Ecodesign preparatory study on mobile phones, smartphones and tablets, published a few weeks ago, specifically assessing the feasibility of proposing Ecodesign and Energy Labelling requirements for these product groups.

The Ecodesign Directive allows setting minimum requirements for products to improve their environmental performance on aspects related to energy consumption, water consumption, emission levels as well as on material efficiency (circular economy). Together with the Energy Labelling Regulation, this legislation ensures that the worst performing products cannot be placed on the EU market and empowers consumers with a simple instrument for an informed choice on energy efficient products.

The public consultation will remain open until 23 August 2021.
