European Hydrogen Week 2022: Boosting the uptake of hydrogen through the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance

Today, the 2022 European Hydrogen Week kicks off in Brussels for a full week of events until 28 October.

Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will attend the event. Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans will deliver a special keynote speech tomorrow during the High-level policy conference dedicated to the EU hydrogen policy.  Commissioner Simson will open the event during the first session “Building the global hydrogen economy”.

The 2022 European Hydrogen Week will be structured in three sections: Hydrogen Europe's Flagship Event and Expo (24-25 October); European Clean Hydrogen Partnership Forum and Clean Hydrogen Partnership Awards (26 October); and EU Research Days and Programme Review (27-28 October). As part of the event, the Commission and all participants will exchange on the work and achievements of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance at a dedicated booth in the event's exhibition area.

In particular, the Commission will showcase the new hydrogen projects supported by the Alliance, update participants about the new Electrolyser Partnership under the Alliance as well as inform about the roadmap to develop hydrogen-related standards. As the EU moves away from its dependency on fossil fuel, renewable hydrogen will play a key role in our future energy systems, and for delivering on the aim set out in the European Green Deal of achieving climate-neutrality in the EU by 2050. The REPowerEU Plan laid out a plan to replace natural gas, coal and oil in hard-to-decarbonise industries and transport sectors through renewable hydrogen, with a contribution from fossil-free hydrogen, setting a target to produce 10 million tonnes domestically in Europe and import 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen in the EU by 2030. The Hydrogen Alliance plays a big role in achieving these aims.

Co-organised by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research together with the Commission, the European Hydrogen Week is the biggest annual event dedicated to hydrogen. It brings together industry, policymakers, researchers and the public to shape the potential for clean hydrogen technologies and discuss latest developments in the sector.
