This is the second edition of the Copernicus Market Report to be published and it updates the content from the first edition, which was released in 2016. It analyses the impact of Copernicus on 10 sectors: agriculture, forestry, urban monitoring, maritime exploitation and preservation, oil and gas, renewable energy, air quality management, insurance for natural disasters, response for natural disasters, and security.
According to the report, total investment in the Copernicus programme is forecast to reach €8.2 billion between 2008 and 2020. Over the same period, this investment is expected to generate economic benefits of between €16.2 billion and €21.3 billion.
Main findings
Policymakers and researchers, commercial and private users, as well as the global scientific community all benefit from the data provided by Copernicus, which supports research and day-to-day activities in a variety of non-space domains.
For example, smart farming services utilising Earth observation data in Greece have led to a 19% decrease in the consumption of water, fertilisers and pesticides, as well as a 10% increase in production.
Copernicus can also help forecast pollen dispersion, allowing allergy sufferers to better plan their outdoor activities via dedicated apps.
Law enforcement is another area that has benefited from Copernicus data. Thanks to the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service, Spanish customs officials recently managed to seize 2.4 tons of cocaine from a vessel that had been monitored by satellites.
In the energy sector, Copernicus ERA5 technology has increased the project return for every 100 megawatts produced through wind energy, from €1 million to €3 million.
Copernicus has also provided emergency maps for 80% of the floods that have recently occurred in Europe (such as floods in France early last year). These maps help provide emergency services with an important overview of the situation.
