The Pact for Skills, one of the 12 flagship actions of the European Skills Agenda, celebrates its first birthday today and it already delivered concrete achievements.
The first five partnerships in key industrial ecosystems, including the automotive, microelectronics, aerospace and defence sectors, and more recently in offshore renewable energy and shipbuilding and maritime technology, have led to commitments to up- and reskill over 1.5 million people over the next few years. This is the result of high-level discussions throughout the year with all 14 industrial ecosystems.
Marking the anniversary, Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, Commissioners Nicolas Schmit and Thierry Breton said: “One year on, the Pact for Skills is delivering: 450 organisations have pledged to provide the right skills for 1.5 million people. This is a good start and the result of Pact for Skills members, businesses and other partners working together to enhance skills in Europe. Our ambition does not end here. The Commission is committed to further strengthening the Pact and calls on more members to join: having the right skills is essential for people to thrive, for our economy to grow, and for a successful recovery.”
The Pact for Skills brings together employers, trade unions, public employment services, education and training providers, regional authorities and others in identifying the skills needed in different sectors of the economy to ensure everyone is ready for a more green and digital society. Those joining the Pact commit to a charter to build quality and inclusive skills initiatives and work against discrimination and for equal opportunities. Moreover, the joined partnerships and organisations set out concrete targets for activities to further improve and develop people’s skills.
