Country reports on technical textiles in Brazil, Japan, South Korea and the USA

Description

The European Commission and the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) commissioned the company Gherzi van Delden GmbH to carry out a study on export markets in technical textiles, covering Brazil, Japan, South Korea and the USA.

The purpose of the study was to improve knowledge in Europe about technical textiles opportunities outside of the EU – with particular emphasis on the countries mentioned above.

Results of the study

The study offers a quantified view on technical textiles supply and demand in regional markets and within 12 product families. It examined the market performance in yarn and fabric-type technical textiles, as well as non-woven technical textiles.

According to the study, the global consumption in the technical textiles market in 2014 had an estimated value of US$147 billion, showing a growth rate of 6% per year since 2010. In the same period, the EU’s technical textiles production reached a value of US$29.8 billion, demonstrating an annual growth rate of 4.6% since 2010.

About 48% of EU technical textiles production is exported. Yarn-type technical textiles production reached an export share of over 70%, due mainly to the worldwide historical success of medical sutures made in the EU.

For Brazil, Japan, South Korea and the USA, the study also analysed

  • the conditions of the technical textiles market situation
  • export opportunities

It did this by identifying areas that represented particular export opportunities for the EU technical textiles sector.
