The role of the EU in global manufacturing value chains

Analysis in this area investigated the structural change associated with the formation of global value chains for producing manufactured goods. In particular it identified the EU's shrinking role in global manufacturing and quantified the impact of specific drivers.

EU single market integration and the formation of European value chains

This block of work investigated how the formation of the single market facilitated the formation of value chains and EU-cross border value added. It also analysed whether increased European integration was accompanied by increasing competitiveness and productivity.

Work on restrictive service regulation and its economic impacts, with a focus on retail

In this activity, carried out during spring/summer 2018, the impact of service restrictions on up- and downstream economic activities was investigated. Over time, the analysis was focused on the EU retail sector.

Recent evolution of firm mark-ups in the EU

In this block of research carried out during winter 2018/19, JRC reviewed the state of current knowledge on firms' mark-ups, and in particular the question of whether the rising trend of mark-ups observed in the US is also detected in Europe. JRC also carried out its own empirical analysis using CompNet data.
