Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin in Chile

Everybody is familiar with the concept of Geographical Indications (GIs) and Appellations of Origin (AOs).

Description

It is as simple as going to the supermarket to buy “Roquefort” instead of “blue cheese”. The consumer prefers some products knowing the origin of the product as an indicator of quality, confidence and reputation. Like all other IPR, GIs and AOs are territorial rights. It is therefore recommendable to be protected in Chile before doing business in the country. This Factsheet is specifically focused on the Chilean system to protect Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin and its implications for European SMEs.
