Dyeing from Nature

An environmentally sustainable yarn dyeing process

Key facts

Sectors covered: Technological innovation in textiles and clothing

Innovation priority: Circular economy and resource efficiency

Start: September 2021

ELIIT funding: €70 000

By combining their skills, Fili Pari and Dyeberg ––  the partners in the Dyeing from Nature project –– have identified opportunities to grow and overcome obstacles to their development.

Thanks to this ELIIT project, Fili Pari has gained access to a cutting-edge machinery, production processes and industrial dyeing expertise.

This has all helped to save water and energy. As part of these changes, Dyeberg has had the chance to improve its dyeing methods by using recycled materials and replacing chemical pigments with natural alternatives.

What's the goal?

Dyeing from Nature aims to create an efficient and innovative dyeing process to produce and sell sustainable natural-dyed yarns, saving up to 150 litres of water.

The commercial objectives are twofold: Selling yarns for the apparel and interior sectors business-to-business, and using the yarns to create marble-dyed fabrics. Fili Pari will use these fabrics to produce garments for its fashion brand.

Key challenges

A key challenge is bringing together the skills of Dyeberg and Fili Pari to positively impact the textile industry and help save the planet. The partnership intends to create a collection of natural yarns for the textile sector. The yarns will be dyed with natural colours (marble and mineral-based), and a patented production process will optimise energy and water consumption.

How has ELIIT helped?

ELIIT’s support has enabled the partners to dedicate additional time and effort to the project. They have experimented with producing different types of yarn, tested different natural mineral pigments, conducted technical performance tests in external laboratories and furthered their research into using natural colours as dyeing agents.

In addition, mentoring through ELIIT has helped them to formulate a strategy rather than just a product. The partners also received legal assistance on intellectual property and know-how protection.

Meet the partners

Dyeberg is a company specialising in dyeing and winding yarns for third parties. Working flexibly, it supplies clients with a range of yarns in various quantities and types.

Dyeberg strongly believes in research and development as a driver of innovation. It has developed new technologies to improve dyeing processes and make them more sustainable.

Fili Pari is a fashion-tech start-up that aims to place innovation in the textile sector at the service of responsible fashion. Adhering to a circular economy model, the company designs innovative materials and garments based on a characteristic feature of the Italian landscape: marble.

Fili Pari’s know-how in this field allows it to use textile production methods and innovative processes with by-products from the stone industry and natural minerals as raw materials.
