Introduction

One of the most serious and persistent issues in public health is musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), due to occupational hazards, especially those affecting the lumbar of the spine. This constitutes a primary health and socioeconomic problem in several working population groups at EU level, due to its high prevalence in workers, it is quickly becoming one of the most disabling disorders.

Many MSDs can be prevented by ergonomic interventions that modify work activities and workplaces by assessing risk factors. This principle is already incorporated into current European directives and legislation of EU countries, meaning it is a legal obligation for European companies to comply with. Companies need tools and instruments that provide more efficient and interactive information on postural health and habits, identifying the level of risk and proposing effective preventive measures for their workers.

All this motivated WEARLUMB to research the idea of becoming a tool for non-invasive monitoring of a worker to detect the early signs of postural problems through a textile wearable. The wearable would then measure postural data in real-time while it is being worn.

The technology asset WEARLUMB is owned by the EURECAT technology centre and has been developed in cooperation with international partners the ATOS Group and SGS. The transfer of the WEARLUMB technology from EURECAT to SENSING TEX will allow the manufacturing processes to be refined and scaled up through technical and business expertise, bringing it to the TRL9. The integration will also make easier to discover business opportunities by using the established experience and technology to set-up a commercial structure to bring the product to market.

Objectives

  • Business opportunity: evaluate business opportunities in the field of ergonomic risk assessment. Secondary, to explore niches within the market and identify further opportunities.
  • Technology transfer (technical): to establish knowledge transfer processes that will allow the technology to be brought to market promptly.
  • Technology transfer (legal): define transfer strategy, establish terms and conditions and establish a final transfer agreement between the technology owner (EUT) and the textile SME (STEX).
  • Implementation: provider agreements, production flow chart, manufacturing prototypes, quality testing and product or service pricing.

Outcome of ELIIT project support

Impact (to date): The first impact of the support action is the cooperation between the technology owner and the SME, that has proven expertise in smart textile applications and has an interest in integrating this new technology into their business portfolio.
