Dassault Systèmes (3DS) provides Business & People with 3DEXPERIENCE Universes to imagine sustainable innovations capable of harmonizing Products, Nature and Life. The 3DS dedicated raw materials business area called GEOVIA is a world-leading solution suite for modelling and simulating our Planet to improve predictability, efficiency, safety and sustainability of our natural resources.
Currently GEOVIA’s expertise lies in the extractive industry of mining. The future strategy is to model “The Virtual Planet” which crosses four key sectors; mining, oil and gas, water and agriculture. 3DS is committed to bringing innovations to the market. It has extensive experience in taking new products, services, technologies and ideas to the commercial sector.

The EU Mineral Sector Challenge
The 3DS European Mineral Asset Definition and Valuation System (EUROASSET) will be developed to overcome the barriers that currently constrain the European Mineral Sector and which the SIP developed by the EIP is designed to break down. In general terms these are:
Lack of Unified Data Model
Diversity of evaluation and analysis techniques
Lack of centralised system to evaluate existing datasets through the EU
Dependence on specialist skills
Lack of integration with downstream activities in the minerals sector (e.g mineral processing, manufacturing, recycling, etc
Inability to alleviate non-technical perceptions and opinions
No reliable mechanism for economic and risk evaluations

Through its unique material life-cycle simulation approach, 3DS is well placed to provide a platform that will address these issues on any scale. At present, 3DS already provides modelling and analysis tools to individual clients on an industry-based portfolio of products and the objective of drawing on EU support will be to provide a platform that harmonizes the data sets and technology that is already synonymous with best practice for the delimitation and evaluation of raw material resources

Description of the activities

GEOVIA EUROASSET proposes to facilitate the formation of a globally accepted unified data model for the storage and sharing of all spatial data related to raw materials. This would underpin a system we also propose to develop, of rapid deposit modelling and economic analysis tools, coupled with a rich visualisation client for visually engaging and effective communication of the results. This unified system of geological resource evaluation and visualisation will be developed on three key initiatives;

1. Data Model, Data Storage, Connectivity and Presentation

At the heart of any software solution is the data model. GEOVIA proposes to facilitate the creation and global acceptance of a unified data model for spatial data relating to Raw Materials. We will create a centralised system (or 3DGeodatabase) to store data and provide connections to external data sources and locations. This 3DGeodatabase will understand the multitude of file formats across any external sources of different spatial configurations. This can be done by offering both a centralised repository to store this data, or by offering a connection to an external data source from the central repository. The connection could be live or it could be an as-requested pull of information. Once the data has been drawn from the connection is would be converted on the fly as it was delivered to and utilised by the user.

The data from the centralised 3D Geodatabase would be accessed by a rich data viewer capable of multi-scale 3D interactive viewing of the information from the highest aerial view down to first person. The viewer would have a sophisticated graphics edge over existing technologies, offering realistic animation, textures and lighting.

Controls and interaction with the viewer would be secure and confidentiality ensured by means of password and login credentials for secure data.

2. Rapid Exploratory Modelling of Raw Material Deposits.

GEOVIA will deliver an implicit modelling solution that is applicable to a broad range of Raw Material deposit types, including massive type deposits, stratigraphic and also vein hosted deposits.
The time savings gained when using these automated methods would allow more widespread and rapid understanding of all new exploration information.

This system would be delivered in a manner which provided flexibility in it delivery platform. It could be made available as a traditional installable software package, which would take advantage of the processing power of dedicated machines. This would enable larger companies who frequently engage in exploration work to buy more powerful machines and make best use of those resources.

Alternatively the modelling system could also be deployed online, enabling those with smaller budgets access to the same leading edge tools as others, but in a pay-as-you-go model. This could also provide the opportunity to have centrally hosted data storage, and could potentially open up a market for data sharing and re-sale.

3. Rapid Economic Analysis of Raw Material Deposits

Once rapid exploratory modelling has been completed, the resulting geological model can be analysed using an economic analysis tool, which would calculate the net present value (NPV) of the deposit to provide an indication of the feasibility of extracting it.
This system would also be available in the same delivery models as the rapid modelling system – both as an installable product or an online model with the same benefits as previously described.

 

Description of the expected impacts

Objectives and Work Packages

1. Enable rapid early stage assessments of mining assets of all depositional environments.

2. Provide a consistent tool and approach too deposit evaluation and economic assessment which will allow for the comparative analysis between deposits to be more meaningful.

3. Allow for an iterative modelling process which currently does not exist.

4. Supply a system with live data connections providing instantaneous updates.

5. Deliver an online marketplace for the sharing and re-use of exploration data;

6. Create a solution which is accessible to all levels of budgets.

The execution of the project is expected to take place in a number of discreet work packages that will run concurrently over a duration of four years. The work packages are designed to meet the technological and non- technological components of the project as well as provide a significant element of international cooperation.

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Angewandten Forschung e.V.

Role within the commitment: Fraunhofer will lead the CFRP and GFRP recycling research.
Fraunhofer will perform corrosion tests on the developed materials.
Fraunhofer will work with CIDAUT on the implementation, validation and refinement of LCCA tools for the project. Fraunhofer is the Quality Manager of the Consortium and will oversee deliverables and general reporting are produced with the best possible quality following agreed review standards.

Fundacion Cidaut

Role within the commitment: CIDAUT will lead the research activities on materials recycling and compounding, implementing lab scale demonstrators of each process at its premises and, later, supporting end-users upscale the processes.
CIDAUT will perform mechanical tests, microstructural analyses, injection moulding capability studies on the developed materails, and will work with Fraunhofer on the implementation, validation and refinement of LCCA tools for the project.

RWTH Aachen University (Institute of plastic processing (IKV)

Role within the commitment: RWTH will implement the novel 3D Generative Preforming process (3D Fibre Spraying) that enables to create high-value long fibre-reinforced 3D preforms for thermoplastic and thermoset composites at low process costs (different kinds of yarn as a raw material, low tooling costs due to low cavity pressures). This cost effective technology allows to align the sprayed fibres in order to produce high-performance, engineered anisotropic products.

Universita' di Cagliari

Role within the commitment: University of Cagliari is one of the leading European organization in the resin design and coupling with thermoplastic and thermose materials. University of Cagliari will support in the definition of the composite materials, both from CFRP/GFRP, ABS and Rare Earth composite material.

Relight

Role within the commitment: RELIGHT will work with ITRB to provide the research partners with residues for the recycled ABS supply and the REE recovery processes, including their HydroWEEE process as part of the processes to be studied and analyzed.

Piaggio Aerospace

Role within the commitment: Piaggio Aerospace is one of the project End Users (Aeronautics Industry): as such it will provide requirements and further applications that could be developed with the Consortium Materials. Piaggio will assist in the compounds selection, provide Fraunhofer with specific corrosion requirements on business jet size aircraft, and will assess that the developed materials performance fits the selected applications desired improvements.

Blackshape Aircrafts

Role within the commitment: Blackshape Aircrafts is one of the project End Users (Aeronautics Industry): as such it will provide requirements and further applications that could be developed with the Consortium Materials. Blackshape will support to fulfill the requirements of the aeronautics industry on ultra light jet, light jet and trainer for Syllabus, and will assess that the developed alloys performance fits the selected applications desired improvements.

KU Leuven

Name of the organisation: KU Leuven Country: Belgium Entity profile: Academia
Role within the commitment: KUL will collaborate on the balance problem studies and will lead the rare earth recovery research with the solvometallurgical and ionometallurgical processes.
KUL will also contribute to the final compounding selection.
KUL is the Dissemination Manager of the project, promoting that all partners are active on the project Dissemination.

FIDAMC

Role within the commitment: FIDAMC is going to lead the Work Package on Compression Moulding with CFRP-enhanced materials. As part of the AIRBUS Group, FIDAMC will also be able to provide the input material.
FIDAMC successfully developed a 3D Printer of own design to serve the Aerospace Industry and will be supporting Smart Lab 3D Industries in its 3D printer design.

COMPOSITE INNOVATION CENTER

Role within the commitment: Composite Innovation Center is one of the world leading organization in the field of Composite materials, both from carbon fiber and vegetal-based fibers.
Composite Innovation center has successfully implemented, at lab-scale, recycling processes for CFRP and GFRP.
