Confidence Indicator for the industrial ecosystems

Updated every month and based on data extracted by the Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys, provides a timely indication of the state of each ecosystem at the EU level.

We build a profile of the economic sentiment for each ecosystem, by calculating a weighted average of the values of those sectors included in the definition of each ecosystem; the weights are based on the share of value added that each sector has in the total value added of the ecosystem, as a measure of the relevance of that sector to that ecosystem.

Key messages of this edition

  • The overall trend remains generally stable with a slightly positive twist compared to the previous month. Half of all ecosystems recorded an increase in confidence.
  • Aerospace & Defence, Tourism and Retail display the largest increase this month. Energy Intensive Industries keep their increasing trend for half a year now.
  • The raise in confidence for Aerospace & Defence is driven mostly by the lift in Security and investigation activities;
  • The largest decrease was recorded for Digital. It is driven mostly by the decline in Repair of computers and personal and household goods, Information service activities, and Publishing activities outweighing the increase in other sectors.
  • The general positive tone of the overall confidence across ecosystems hides some deterioration of the confidence in current and expected demand for several ecosystems. This is the case for Digital, Creative & Cultural Industries, Electronics, Energy-Renewables and Textile.

Note: For 'Retail', 'Agrifood', 'Proximity-Social Economy', 'Renewable Energies', and 'Health', data available only partially cover that ecosystem, so we used dashed lines and the related values have to be interpreted with caution
