The EU chemical industry moves forward to net-zero: progress report unveils major strides in the green and digital transition

Today, the European Commission has published its first annual progress report on the co-implementation of the Transition Pathway for the Chemical Industry. The report highlights substantial advances made to transform the sector. About 80% of the measures identified in the pathway have been supported, demonstrating strong efforts to achieve net-zero, while simultaneously enhancing competitiveness and resilience.

The report also presents a new version of the regulatory roadmap included in this transition pathway, outlining relevant pieces of legislation for the EU's chemical industry and indicative timelines for adoption and implementation.

The Commission co-developed the pathway with EU countries, industry and all interested parties to guide the chemical industry in its transformative journey towards a green and digital future. It showcases 187 actions needed to drive investments in clean technologies and safe and sustainable chemicals. Following its release in 2023, the Commission initiated a collaborative effort with all stakeholders to co-implement these actions.

The Commission will continue its inclusive and regular dialogues with stakeholders to inform policy making and build the stepping stones for a competitive and sustainable chemical industry in Europe.

To this end, the Commission plans to launch a stakeholder support platform by early 2025. This platform will offer a one stop shop to find the necessary resources, including information on funding, regulations, and industry reports. Moreover, it will provide stakeholders with the opportunity to engage in discussions and collaboration spaces.

In parallel, the Commission intends to collect and review new initiatives to update the list of 112 projects for the twin transition published on its website
