Entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

What the European Commission does for SMEs

In Europe, SMEs represent 99% of all businesses and provide jobs to more than 85 million European citizens, out of 200 million in employment. But their impact goes beyond numbers - SMEs are at the heart of Europe's innovation and entrepreneurship. The ideas and solutions of 24,3 million entrepreneurs, women and men, contribute to a sustainable and digital economy, thereby making them central to Europe’s competitiveness.
Recognising how important they are, the European Commission is committed to supporting enterprises from the moment they first become an SME, through their growth, and development into small mid-caps.
