The Chief Economist Team

The Chief Economist Team & Business Intelligence Unit at the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs is responsible for the development, coordination and production of economic analysis, as well as for business intelligence, ensuring that the Directorate-General (DG) bases its initiatives on sound economic evidence. 

Chief Economist Román Arjona leads the team. His Deputy is William Connell. 

We provide the DG with timely, robust and practical economic advice. We are involved in a broad spectrum of economic matters: from single market deepening and industrial policy modernisation to the analysis of strategic value chains and dependencies and the competitiveness and industrial aspects of the European green deal. We are also responsible for the coordination of the Chief Economists Networks inside the Commission and with Member States.

We also serve as the Commission's central hub for business intelligence. We gather and analyse information on specific risks and opportunities for EU businesses that may impact on our economic security and competitiveness. Our work has a focus on strategic sectors and technologies, and events with the potential to disrupt EU value chains. With timely insights, our efforts support the development of effective strategies that promote the European Union’s economic security and competitiveness agendas.
