Today, the Commission held the second meeting of the High-Level Forum on European Standardisation. The forum is a key component of the EU's strategy on standardisation, playing a pivotal role in influencing the trajectory of the European single market.
It actively identifies strategic standardisation needs and lends support to key policy areas. Comprising high-level representatives from diverse interest groups, the forum is a multi-stakeholder platform committed to identifying standardisation priorities that align with EU policies and legislation.
At the meeting, the forum took note of the progress of the 15 workstreams, covering a wide range of areas including green electricity systems, low carbon cement, clean hydrogen, data interoperability and the aspects of fundamental rights and standards, especially important in the context of AI. The forum discussed how to ensure European industry leadership in international standards-setting.
Members of the forum also presented a pledge to Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, in which they commit to work on education and skills on standardisation to ensure that Europe has the best experts in the standards-development process.
Background
The Commission announced the creation of the High-Level Forum as a part of the EU strategy on standardisation in 2022 to support a green, digital and resilient single market, further align standardisation actions with European policy priorities, industrial innovation and investment activities; as well as to address other actions foreseen under the strategy. The forum comprises representatives from EU/EEA countries, European standardisation organisations, industry, civil society and academia. The current composition includes 55 members, with 5 seats open for applications through an ongoing call.
