Third European Hydrogen Forum

On 30 November 2021, the third European Hydrogen Forum took place with almost 700 participants from the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance.

The Director-General of Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Kerstin Jorna, presented an ambitious alliance pipeline of investment projects, which features more than 750 hydrogen projects that alliance members are undertaking to implement on a large scale. The pipeline is a testimony to the dynamism and size of the European hydrogen economy. The project pipeline, a searchable database of all 750-plus projects, was published on the same day to coincide with the Hydrogen Forum.

Discussions during the forum focused on regulatory and financing conditions that would support the rollout of the projects on the pipeline. A first panel discussed some of the main barriers and enabling conditions for the large-scale deployment of clean hydrogen, based in part on the alliance roundtable reports on barriers and mitigation measures. Main issues included

  • upcoming regulation of conditions under which electrolysers can access renewable electricity
  • planning and regulation of hydrogen infrastructures and permitting conditions
  • hydrogen standardisation requirements

Dr Werner Hoyer, President of the European Investment Bank, opened the second panel with a keynote speech. The panel provided insight into how banks and investment funds assess hydrogen projects for investment decisions.

The Hydrogen Forum concluded with a discussion of Commissioner Thierry Breton with a group of CEOs/VPs from Daimler Trucks, Air Liquide, SNAM, and ArcelorMittal Europe discussing how to make the European hydrogen economy a reality.
