Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton will be joined by MEP Karima Delli, Chair of the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee, to open the event, followed by an orientation debate on creating a resilient, world-leading tourism ecosystem with innovative SMEs and thriving communities. The event will also feature three roundtables related to the green transition, the digital transition and upskilling of tourism workers. An exhibition on meta tourism - the creation of virtual worlds to promote tourism destinations - will take place in parallel. The event will take stock of the implementation of the Transition Pathway for tourism and the EU Tourism Agenda 2030, both published last year.

During the event, the Commission will touch upon other initiatives to boost the tourism ecosystem including the establishment of a tourism stakeholder platform and the development of a common European data space for tourism to support the digital transformation of the sector.

The Commission will announce the opening of the 2024 EU Capital of Smart Tourism, which rewards European cities for outstanding, innovative, digitalised and sustainable tourism practices, and the 2024 EU Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism (former EDEN prize), which promotes sustainable tourism practices in smaller tourist destinations.
